Chapter Nine

There were some storm clouds on the horizon as they moved toward the village, but no rain yet. His heart was beating a little fast, and he was unsure at the cause of anxiety for a moment. It was the plan. It was cold-blooded and calculated. They were the first scouts he’d have his Sadie take down, and it didn’t feel the same as taking down raiders.

Raiders were evil men, rapists, thieves, and killers as a rule. When he fought and destroyed them it was in active defense of a community that they were in the midst of attacking for the most part. Even in the case of the guards outside of Allentown, those men had evil murder and theft in their hearts and were poised to attack an innocent trade caravan.

This felt a bit different. It was war, and the men were prejudiced against magic and bent on conquering their communities, but in that moment they were no danger. He could take them prisoner instead. On the other hand, it was a war and not just criminal men, not a war he’d started, but a surprise attack on enemy forces embedded within one of their communities with mischief and murder on their minds.

An advanced force working to conquer them.

That made a big difference. There was also the matter the enemy must have a kept sorcerer keeping in touch with all their scout teams, or it’d be impossible for them to share their scouting reports and observations so the main army could be split and given final orders and details about the community they’d be controlling.

Leaving them alive would be a mistake, jailed the sorcerer would find out there was an army on their side too and pass that on. He wasn’t naïve enough to think the enemy wouldn’t find out at some point what they were doing, but the longer they could keep it a secret the better.

It still felt wrong, but he suspected that was just the absurdity of war.

Their horses slowed down to a walk as they neared the community square and main buildings.

Selina shook her head, then turned her head and mouthed, “Whorehouse.”

He nodded in understanding, and despite the armor enchantments being active he felt his shoulder blades itch as they rode past it and stopped in front of the Inn. They dismounted and tied their horses.

Selina said, “Blacksmith.”

They started to walk the two buildings over, and he didn’t need her help to identify the enemy soldier, but it was good to have verification. The man stood out even in civvies, with his calf high leather boots and the way he held himself pointed to military training.

Rather than use a spell, he reached out with his life magic which didn’t require one, just focus and intent.

His magic seized the man’s muscles as he walked out, including his diaphragm and ability to cry out. Of course, the beautiful red-haired Sadie was there to catch the poor man who had obviously just tripped. He didn’t even see
